The Internet is awash with pictures of the abalone in various
stages of its' life. Some are of people eating abalone, others
of people pulling them out of the water or holding them up with
big smiles after a hunt. The most popular, however, are probably
the ones that are taken of the abalone in its' natural habitat on
the ocean floor or stuck to a craggy rock submerged beneath the
surface of the sea.
Given the international general popularity of the abalone, it is
not surprising that it is one of the most photographed creatures in
the world, despite the fact that most of it's body is covered with
barnacles and algae and it pretty much looks like a part of the
rock it's sticking to. Abalone have a sort of cult-like following
by travelers and adventures world wide, who create entire web pages
regaling the entire world with tales of their last abalone - a -
thon camping excursion.
