If they were to hold a worldwide abalone race, who would win?
Could we bet safely on the Red Abalone to place well ahead of
other varieties? Or would their size drag them down as other
slimmer, sleeker versions pulled into the lead? It's possible
that they could pull it out with sheer muscle, as they have the
highest meat to shell ratio of any other species. What they might
lack in aerodynamics they could make up for with sheer brute
force.
Why has there never been such a contest? Whether Red Abalone
might win or not is beside the point. Isn't anyone curious as to
the possible competitive nature of not only Red Abalone, but of
all species of abalone? People race frogs, crabs, even fleas,
why not abalone? Abalone races could incorporate educational
workshops and provide a gathering place for disseminating
information regarding the protection of their habitat and general
abalone conservation. Of course, it may take a day or two before
any detectable movement is made to indicate whether it is the Red
Abalone or their Black-lipped cousin who is the swiftest of the
lot, but what the heck - make it a sleepover camp-out event!
